Local Somerset Food and Drink
The area boasts some wonderful pubs and restaurants, as well as interesting places to buy locally produced cider and cheese. Bring a healthy thirst and appetite!
Here’s a list of a few of our local pubs where we have eaten as a family. We have included those which we have tried at some time or another, but of course there are lots more in the area locally – we can’t get around them all! Please ask us for our recommendations.
Bar and Restaurant
Tel: 01749 841703
We say, “It’s the closest pub and restaurant to your Hut at only 1 country mile away or 5 minutes by car, you could even walk there in the summer time. Consistently very good food, plenty of tables to choose from, you can dine in the bar area or the restaurant, your choice it’s the same fair prices for either, we love their sharing board for two, don’t forget to choose a bottle of wine as well!
We say, “Amazing high quality breakfasts and unlimited coffee! Super lunches from celebrated cookery writer and larger than life Paul Hartley, don’t judge this book by its cover you might not be able to put it down once you start, only a 5 minute drive or 1 country mile from your Hut.”
29-33 Waterloo Road
Tel: 01749 343648
We say, “It’s probably the nearest bistro around here, it’s quite cosy when you enter the door, but at the same time very welcoming. Blostins Restaurant has been run by the current owner for over 20 years now, it’s a time honoured restaurant, offering good value for money, 5 country miles or 10 minutes from your Hut.”
Goodfellows at Wells
5 Sadler Street
Tel: 01749 673866
We say, “It’s the only true seafood restaurant in the area, and well worth a visit for a lovely evening out. Push the boat out and try the taster menu, reserve your table in the window and watch the world go by in Wells, or sit next to the open plan kitchen. Make sure you raid the piggy bank before you visit here, 5 country miles away from your Hut or 10 minutes by car.
The Oakhill Inn
Tel: 01749 840442
We say, “This pub offers excellent food and drink only 5 minutes’ drive or 1.5 country miles from your Hut. It is often fully booked at the weekends so book in advance, as it’s great place for that special meal. Even a really good pub just for drinks as well but get there early doors before it gets busy.”
The George Inn
Tel: 01749 342306
We say, “This lovely small family run traditional 17th century pub is in the heart of the village, and provides real home cooked food as well as a good selection of quality beers and local ciders. Check their website site for their regular food events, at only 2.5 country miles from your Hut or 5 minutes by car, you could even stroll down the back lanes to this pub in the summer time!”
The Ploughboy Inn
Tel: 01761 241375
We say, “Good simple value pub grub, unfortunately they do not take bookings so get there early!”
The Shrubbery Hotel
17 Commercial Road
Tel: 01749 346 671
We say, “The small and friendly Shrubbery Hotel situated in the centre of Shepton Mallet has been providing food and drink for as long as I can recall, with a bar menu or restaurant menu to choose from. Why not pop in and say hello to Lorraine (the owner) for either lunch or dinner. The Friday night steak night is excellent value for money, and there is a good atmosphere to enjoy with the locals and guests alike in the bar.”
Tel: 01749 677681
We say, “A good place to eat with reasonable prices. If you’re lucky you may be able to get a table overlooking the Bishops’ Palace moat, if not it will be overlooking the historic market place. A good start to a night out in Wells! 5 country miles away from your Hut or 10 minutes by car.”
